Rafael “Ted” Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1970.

The Texas senator was not born in an overseas military base or other United States Soil and his parents had to apply with the State Department to recognize the overseas birth.

The Constitution requires presidents be “Natural Born Citizens” which arguably means they were born citizens with no naturalization process required.

While Ted Cruz’s mother was a U.S. Citizen, which qualifies him for citizenship regardless of the place of his birth, his birth in Canada required a qualification process through the U.S. Department of State.
