Michigan Gov. Whitmer caught in lockdown hypocrisy

There’s one set of rules for the people of Michigan… and, apparently, another set of rules for Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and her family.

Whitmer has attracted huge controversy in Michigan over one of the most draconian lockdown orders in the nation.

But Whitmer’s own husband apparently wasn’t following that.

Whitmer’s husband, Marc Mallory, made a request to NorthShore Dock LLC’s owner Tad Dowker, asking him to put his boat in the water at the family’s second home.

“This morning, I was out working when the office called me, there was a gentleman on hold who wanted his boat in the water before the weekend,” Dowker wrote, in a Facebook post. “Being Memorial weekend and the fact that we started working three weeks late means there is no chance this is going to happen.”

Dowker continued: “Our office personnel had explained this to the man and he replied, ‘I am the husband to the governor, will this make a difference?'” Dowker added that Mallory was respectful and gracious after his request was denied anyway.

The problem? Whitmer had told people not living in Northern Michigan to stay away from vacation spots over the long weekend. The couple’s second home is located in Northern Michigan–far from the state capital in Lansing.

What’s more, Whitmer had previously banned motorboating–and she had previously banned people from visiting their second homes at all.

Whitmer’s office initially denied Dowker’s comments as an “online rumor.”

Whitmer herself later dismissed it as a “failed attempt at humor.”

“Obviously, with the motorized boating prohibition in our early days of COVID-19, he thought it might get a laugh,” Whitmer added. “It didn’t, and to be honest, I wasn’t laughing either when it was relayed to me, because I knew how it would be perceived. He regrets it. I wish it wouldn’t have happened, and that’s really all we have to say about it.”
