The liberal left absolutely despises Education Secretary Betsy DeVos—but there’s one thing she’s doing that makes it clear that she values the needs of the American people over her own.
Education Department spokesperson Liz Hill told the Associated Press that DeVos pays her own travel expenses out of pocket when she flies around the country on official business.
That includes expenses incurred by DeVos’s private jet, along with hotel accommodations—as well as the transportation expenses of her security detail and any other Department of Education staff who happens to be traveling with her.
Hill explained: “Secretary DeVos accepted her position to serve the public and is fully committed to being a faithful steward of taxpayer dollars.”
As a result, DeVos “neither seeks, nor accepts, any reimbursement for her flights, nor for any additional official travel-related expenses, such as lodging and per diem, even though she is entitled to such reimbursement under government travel regulations,” Hill added.
In fact, since coming into office earlier this year, DeVos—whose family fortune comes in at a jaw-dropping $5.5 billion—has charged just one expense to the Department of Education: a roundtrip Amtrak ticket from DC to Philadelphia, which coast $184.
By contrast, DeVos’s predecessor under Obama, Education Secretary John King, spent more than $39,000 of taxpayer dollars on travel during his first few months in office. Considering DeVos travels by private jet, she’s likely saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in Department of Education dollars–thanks to her personal generosity.
At her Senate confirmation hearing in January, DeVos stated that she even wanted to take her out-of-pocket expenses a step further–by waiving her right to her six-figure government salary.
However, due to government rules that require her to be paid, DeVos does accept a salary—but has since said she plans to donate every dollar to charity.
