On Sunday, a heated exchange took place between President Trump, and retiring GOP Senator Bob Corker, on Twitter. Trump accused Sen. Corker of weakness, while Corker rejected the accusation and calling the White House an, “adult day care center.”
Early Sunday morning, President Trump tweeted, claiming that Corker sought his endorsement for his re-election bids, which Trump claimed to have declined. He wrote, “Senator Bob Corker ‘begged’ me to endorse him for re-election in Tennessee. I said ‘NO’ and he dropped out (said he could not win without…..my endorsement).”
However, Corker’s Chief of Staff, Todd Womack, replied that the President in fact pushed the Tennessee senator to run again, and even offered his own endorsement if Corker decided to make the run. Todd noted, “The president called Senator Corker on Monday afternoon and asked him to reconsider his decision not to seek reelection and reaffirmed that he would have endorsed him, as he has said many times.”
Trump doubled down on his criticism of Corker, declaring, “He also wanted to be Secretary of State, I said ‘NO THANKS.’ He is also largely responsible for the horrendous Iran Deal!” He added that, “…Hence, I would fully expect Corker to be a negative voice and stand in the way of our great agenda. Didn’t have the guts to run!” accusing Corker for not having enough courage to run for reelections.
In his last tweet of the interaction, Corker lamented, “It’s a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning.”
Later during the day, Trump doubled down on his criticism of Corker’s role in the disastrous Iran Deal, “Bob Corker gave us the Iran Deal, & that’s about it. We need HealthCare, we need Tax Cuts/Reform, we need people that can get the job done!”
In a New York Times interview that was published on Sunday, Corker said that the President was treating the presidency like a “reality show” and that Trump’s threats against other countries can potentially put U.S. “on the path to World War III.”
Corker has increasingly become a critic of the President, declaring that, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and the Secretary of Defense James Mattis, and Chief of Staff John Kelly, “help separate our country from chaos.”
He said that the three officials “work well together to make sure that the policies that we put forth around the world are sound and coherent, where other people within the administration, in my belief, are not.”
