A majority of Democrats now think illegal immigrants should be given the right to vote.
According to a new poll by Rasmussen Reports, 54 percent of Democrats support extending voting rights to people who are in the country illegally.
However, despite strong Democratic support, extending the right to vote is not popular: nearly 60 percent of American voters overall disagree.
Currently, immigrants–whether they are in the country legally or illegally–are not allowed to vote in federal elections.
Several cities allow non-citizens to vote in local elections, including liberal San Francisco, which extended the right to vote in school board elections to all immigrants, both legal and illegal.
If Democrats managed to succeed in getting illegal immigrants the right to vote, it would almost immediately ensure Democrats would dominate elections–due to the large support Democrats have among people born in foreign countries.
