The two most powerful Democrats in Washington delivered an uncomfortable, awkward rebuttal to President Trump’s speech about border security… and it was so bad that even the most reliably leftist voices in the mainstream media are melting down.
On liberal MSNBC, host Brian Williams and former Bill Clinton campaign manager James Carville were aghast at the Democratic rebuttal.
“Tonight, this Chuck and Nancy visual tonight launched 1,000 memes while they were still talking,” William lamented. “There was an American gothic meme. There was ‘your mother and I are very upset you stayed out so late’ meme.”
He added that “this visual from tonight goes down in the pantheon” of bad speech responses.
Carville agreed that speech rebuttals–which are commonly done after the State of the Union address, but almost never done after emergency Oval Office speeches like the one Trump gave last night—”seldom” work the way the opposition party wants it to.
“I don’t think they wanted to do it,” Carville said, of Pelosi and Schumer. “I don’t think they should’ve done it. And I guarantee you at the staff meeting tomorrow morning, somebody is gonna get, you know, chewed out pretty good about this whole thing.” Carville laughed. “I’ve been more excited about colonoscopies than [Schumer] was giving his speech tonight. He didn’t want to be there!”
Williams then turned to his colleague, MSNBC Michael Steele–a former RNC chairman who has been barbed in his criticism of Trump. They shared a laugh when Williams noted “that the Democrats only had the one podium. These two people, both of great station and accomplishment, are sharing this little tiny, modest, wooden podium.”
Steele, with a smile, said, “Dems, don’t do that again. don’t know what they were trying to accomplish here. Certainly, the message was lost in the visual.”
