Rumors are circulating that a call from Michelle Obama caused ABC to cancel “Roseanne.”
The story was first broken by Twitter user Josh Cornett, who wrote on Tuesday night, “BREAKING: According to sources ABC President Channing Dungey had a long conversation via phone with former First Lady Michelle Obama before deciding to cancel the Roseanne show. Michelle Obama was reportedly enraged and insisted an apology was inadequate……developing.”
The show’s star, Roseanne Barr, was fired after making derogatory comments about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett—calling her a cross between “Planet of the Apes” and the “Muslim Brotherhood.”
In addition to serving in the White House for eight years, Jarrett is also a longtime friend of both Barack and Michelle Obama.
It’s not clear who Cornett’s sources are—but the claims reached the show’s star, Roseanne Barr, who retweeted it, adding the caption, “Is this true?”
Barr later said that the positive feedback from viewers—as well as the claims that ABC had only acted at the behest of Mrs. Obama—later tweeted: ““You guys make me feel like fighting back. I will examine all of my options carefully and get back to U.”
It’s unclear how Barr plans to fight ABC—the bombastic comedian’s contract allegedly included a morality clause—but it’s clear that the saga surrounding 2018’s top-rated show could be far from over.
