Rep. Brad Sherman has filed an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The article talks about Trump obstructing justice during the federal investigation that was launched against Russia’s interference with the 2016 presidential elections.
While a majority vote in the House is required to impeach the president, it is noted that 46 seats in the House fall under the Republicans.
In his article to impeach President Trump, Sherman mentioned how President Trump had fired FBI director James Comey out of the blue, in May. He further mentioned that this firing should be considered as obstruction justice and accounts as “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Sherman argued that he wishes “to begin a long process to protect our country from abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and impulsive, ignorant incompetence.”
In his impeachment article he cited the allegations made by Comey against Trump for pressurizing him to quit the investigation. “In all of this, Donald John Trump has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as president and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, Donald John Trump, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office,” the article of impeachment read.
Although, it seems as almost unlikely that Sherman’s article will have success. However, it is believed that it could perhaps serve as a reminder to President Trump and his administration to work on their relations with the Republican Party to ensure that they continue to remain in control.
Much to our surprise, the article came about only one day after President Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. was noted to have been in contact with a Russian lawyer that claimed to have “damaging” information on Hillary Clinton, during the 2016 elections.
A spokeswoman for the White House, Sarah Huckabee Sander argued that the article is “ridiculous,” and is nothing more than a “political game.”
“I think that is utterly and completely ridiculous and a political game at its worst,” she stated.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) showed her support, as Ashley Etienne, a spokeswoman for Pelosi stated, “Leader Pelosi has repeatedly called for an outside, independent commission to get to the bottom of Trump’s connection to Russia’s interference in our election and to examine ways to protect the integrity of our democracy from foreign meddling in the future.”
“Recent revelations, coupled with [the] president’s unprecedented campaign of dishonesty and secrecy, give greater urgency to the need for House Republicans [to] bring a vote to the floor immediately to establish an outside, independent commission.” However, Pelosi went on to argue that the Democrats need to invest their time into considering issues that are far more important, such as the issue regarding the Healthcare bill that they have at hand.
