The former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), thought she would easily be named the next Speaker when the Democrats won House last week, but that may not be the case.
There is a large group of House Democrats that want a new direction and a new Speaker are becoming vocal in their battle with Pelosi. For a couple of days, some unhappy Democrats have allegedly passed a letter around revealing their opposition to the former Speaker.
An aide to Kathleen Rice (D-NY) said the letter has already been signed by 17 Congressmen and women, but spoke on the condition of anonymity. The letter is supposedly going to be made public soon.
The House will elect new Speaker on January 3rd, and the number of signatures opposing Pelosi could increase and really threaten her ability to win. Many on the left say they need new leadership.
Last year, when many Democrats around the country were calling for new leadership, Nancy Pelosi made her case for Speaker. She wants to go back and defend the Affordable Care Act.
Just recently, when Pelosi was asked by a journalist how she felt about some of her colleagues putting up a challenge for the Speaker seat, she responded with, “Come on in, the water’s warm.”
Pelosi is a strong political force. She has been in the House since 1993 and as the first woman Speaker of the House she is the highest-ranking female politician in American history.
Pelosi is 78-years-old and if Democrats are looking for a fresh face, more than likely it won’t be Nancy Pelosi. But do they have the power to stop her?
If you ask Republicans, they would love for Nancy Pelosi to continue to be the voice of the Democratic Party.
We’ll see in January if Nancy Pelosi will become the next Speaker of the House or will it be someone new?
