Transgender Makes History After Winning Primary Election For Governor

Ma'am????

Voters in Vermont made history on Tuesday when Christine Hallquist became the first transgender individual to win a primary to become a major party candidate for governor.

Hallquist, a Democrat running her first campaign, has never held office before. The Republican winner, current Governor Phil Scott also won his primary to seek a bid for a second term.

The race has caught national attention and Hallquist says she is not just defending the rights of the LBGT community, but all marginalized people. See a quick interview in the video below.

Christine Hallquist believes she can win and told a crowd of excited supporters at the Skinny Pancake restaurant. She said, “I’m going to tell you why we’re going to win in November, because nothing is impossible when you’re on the side of justice.”

Hallquist doesn’t have an easy road to the Governor’s house. Phil Scott is was able to hold off a Republican challenger and is still the favorite in the Vermont governor race. There is a lot of time until November, and the primaries had a better turnout than 2012 and 2014 according to the Burlington Free Press.

This election is getting the people to the polls, and now that Hallquist has made it to the general election, this race is likely to become a bigger national story.

What do you think about the first transgender person in history becoming a major party candidate for governor?
