Earlier on Monday, the White House confirmed that President Donald Trump’s comment on the Florida school shooting that left 17 dead and several injured was intended towards stepping up as a leader to protect the innocent children at school. The president commented that he would have run into the Florida school amidst the gunfire, which meant that he would have stepped up to take the lead and prevent casualties. It also refers to criticism towards an armed guard who was posted outside the school but did not intervene during the gunfire.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Secretary of Press said on Monday that, “I think he was just stating that as a leader, he would have stepped in and hopefully been able to help. As a number of the individuals that were in the school — the coach and other adults and even a lot of the students — stepped up and helped protect other students.”
“I think the point he was making is that he would have wanted to play a role in that as well,” she added.
President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would have run into the school premises to prevent gunfire and casualties.
“You don’t know until you test it, but I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon,” Trump said. “And I think most of the people in this room would have done that, too.”
President Trump also criticized the guard on duty who did not enter the crime scene, which could have prevented unnecessary deaths and injuries, saying, “They weren’t exactly Medal of Honor winners, alright?” Trump said. “The way they performed was frankly disgusting.”
Just last weekend, President Donald Trump ate lunch with some of the top leaders of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and said that “Don’t worry about the NRA,” President Donald Trump told the governors. ”They’re on our side.”
The shooting incident in Florida High school left 17 dead and several others injured in a shooting spree at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where a deputy sheriff was on duty. The armed sheriff did not intervene to stop the shooter and chose to stay out of the school, leading to several deaths.
According to the Deputy’s lawyer, the sheriff believed that gunshots were fired outside the school and not inside. Country sheriff of Broward, Scott Israel suspended the deputy sheriff from duty after witnessing his actions in a footage retrieved where he stood outside the school. The deputy sheriff has filed for his retirement post his suspension.
